Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is a major international airport located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States. The airport serves as a hub for American Airlines and is the fifth busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic, with over 61 million passengers in 2016. The airport covers an area of 1,500 acres (610 ha) and has four runways.

Opened on December 17, 1928, the original Fort Lauderdale Municipal Airport was located six miles north of downtown Fort Lauderdale. In 1940 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a military airfield next to the municipal field and renamed it Camp Kendrick after Major General Frank D. Kendrick, who had died in an airplane crash two years earlier. During World War II the airfield was used by the United States Army Air Forces Fifth Air Force as a training base for B-25 Mitchell bombers and P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft.

In 1948 the City of Fort Lauderdale obtained ownership of the military airfield and renamed it Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport in honor of Hollywood film stars who had made significant contributions to aviation and tourism. In 1954 American Airlines began service to Hollywood from Miami International Airport, making FLL its primary airline hub. The first terminal building was designed by architect William Pereira and opened in 1957.

In 1960 American Airlines moved its operations into a new terminal building designed by Eero Saarinen which cost $5 million dollars to construct. The new facility could handle up to 50 million
